In her last article, guest blogger and wig coach, Tia Maria gave us some tips and tricks on where to start in your wig buying journey. However, there is so much to learn and know about wigs. In this article, Tia goes much deeper, giving you more information, more advice, and supplying you with all the information you will need to purchase your first wig…or your next!

Step #1: Choosing Your Wig There are so many wigs available, how do you ever narrow down the choices to the best ones for you?! Let’s break down the first set of questions you need to ask yourself, plus the deets you need to make some choices. I’ve outlined several questions you will need to ask yourself when purchasing a wig in the last article. Let’s build on that here and help you gain more understanding to make an informed purchasing decision. WIG FIBER/MATERIAL “What is the price range you are willing to spend on a wig?” and “Do you want synthetic fibers, human hair, or do you have no preference?” In most cases, price is tied to the type of fibers you want and the type and amount of finishes you desire. For the sake of clarity, let’s lay out some terms and define them in the way that I will be discussing them here:

Human Hair – Human hair wigs are made of “natural hair”. That hair can be of Indian, Chinese or European origin. Some wigs even include animal hair like yak. Human Hair Blends - Human hair (30%) and synthetic (70%) mixed in most cases. This hybrid can offer the convenience of synthetic and a more “natural” look that you can get from human hair wigs. Synthetic – A variety of manufactured fibers of various textures – also referred to fake or faux hair. Name brand wigs – Some name brand wigs are referred to as medical wigs as they are made for those who are wearing wigs for medical reasons. Name Brand Wigs come “ready to wear” with high end finishes. Affordable wigs – Wigs that you can find in a Beauty Supply Store and online, customizable, and often come in a wide variety of textures.

Human hair wigs are going to be priced higher than wigs with synthetic fibers. Name Brand or “medical wigs”, are going to be more expensive than affordable or beauty supply store wigs. Why a price difference? Human hair is more expensive because it’s “real” hair and obviously cannot be mass produced like synthetic fibers can. Moreover, if you want a human hair wig that is the same texture and color as your bio hair – depending on your ethnicity and the color - it can drastically impact the price. Name brand/medical wigs come as close to “ready-to-wear” as possible. They can have high-end finishes and comforts including bendable ear tabs, monofilament caps, and hand-tied lace fronts, to name a few.

Affordable wigs have come a long way in the last few years. They can come with many of the same high-end finishes as name brands. Still, there are many great additions and differences that set the price. One huge difference is the market and demographic that is available for affordable wigs versus name brand. This topic can be complex, and I have a video specifically discussing it. For our purposes today, the biggest difference is the ability and sometimes necessity for customization. Affordable wigs may need to be plucked, the part could require setting in a particular way, and lace fronts may need to be cut to your head shape and preferences, etc.

MAINTENANCE/CARE “How much time do you have to spend on a wig?” Some wigs require more time and effort than others. Depending on your preferences, available time, and skill, the price of the wig you choose, may be influenced. For example, because human hair wigs are made of natural hair, they behave like bio hair. A benefit is that they can be styled, straightened, and curled, just like bio hair can. Still, they can have disadvantages for some people. They are susceptible to water, heat, humidity, sun, etc. - just like bio hair would be. This could require more time and effort and at times more skill than you currently possess. If you do not have a lot of experience or time to style your wig, you may want to consider synthetic. I primarily deal with synthetic wigs for 3 reasons. Human hair can require you to glue your wig down. As a migraine sufferer, I need to be able to remove my wig quickly and as needed, so glue is not ideal.

I don’t have the time or desire for regular styling. Synthetic wigs come pre-styled and because they are fibers, they maintain that style - unless you change it by using heat or some other method. They can get wet, it can be hot, and it will maintain the same style it was when you put it on. I love variety!! Human hair wigs can be desirable and beautiful, but they can often be costly. This can limit your ability to have various wigs and various styles. Understanding your comfort level, available time, and your experience with wigs will help you determine what would work best for you.

COACH TIP: For example, if having a wig that looks as close to what your bio hair would look like is important, human hair may be the way to go. If you desire the wig to look like “real” hair but you don’t have a lot of time or experience, a synthetic wig will offer you the “put it on and go” features. If you are comfortable with a bit of customization and you value variety or want your wig to look the same each time you wear it, then an affordable synthetic wig or human hair blended wig could be the better choice. HAIR STYLE, TEXTURE, AND LENGTH “What are your preferences when it comes to hair style, texture, length, and color?” color01.jpg color02.jpg Wearing wigs really broadens your hair style, texture, length, and color options. Refer to or make a list of textures, lengths, styles, and colors you would like to explore. Understanding your preferences will be beneficial in the wig purchasing process.

COACH TIP: If you are new to wigs, have limited time, or not that comfortable wearing wigs in public, I suggest you choose a similar color to your own, pick a style that will be easy for you to manage based on your lifestyle, and go with a wig that is a manageable length and texture. The longer the wig the more maintenance and upkeep it will require – no matter what it’s made of. When it comes to a synthetic wig, the type of “texture” can mean more or less maintenance. I have several videos discussing this topic further – but for the most part silkier and curly wigs tend to tangle the most. Yaki (chemically relaxed hair texture) textured wigs, wigs with some “grip” to the fibers, and/or a wavy styled wigs are usually the easiest to manage. This is not a hard and fast rule but a basic guide for you to make your choice.

Wow! That was a lot of information! The more you learn and the more experience you have with wigs, I promise a lot of this information ill make more sense and your wig choices will be easier to make. Step #2: Purchasing Your Wig Now that you have decided on the wig you’d like to purchase, there are three vital steps that you do not want to skip. Completing these steps PRIOR to purchasing a wig will save you time, money, and disappointment. Measure your head. After you have put in all the effort to pinpoint a wig you want to purchase, you want to ensure as much as possible that the wig will fit when you receive it. The wig cap of a wig can come in various sizes. I will be honest with you wig sizing can be inconsistent and vary between brands and even in different wigs from the same brand. One way to be sure if you are getting a wig that will fit you is to know your measurements. Here’s a chart and guide to measuring your head and understanding your wig size. More name brand wigs often come in specific sizes that can include petite, average, and large. Not every brand or every style will have all three options available. So be sure to double check the size you are purchasing. Affordable wigs do not often come in “sizes”. This is partly because they are made to be customizable. Therefore, the next step is crucial.

Check out reviews. How a wig looks online or in stock photos versus how it looks on you can be very different. There are so many quality wig reviewers and educators on YouTube that can be very beneficial for you. If you find a wig that you would like to purchase, search that wig on YouTube and watch a few reviews. COACH TIP: When you are watching a wig review, I suggest you watch several reviews so that you can get a well-rounded idea of the wig and if it will work for you. Wigs can look different in various lighting and can look completely different from person to person. The first, and most important review to watch, is from a reviewer providing you with thorough information. I have a video outlining what you should learn from a quality wig review - as not all reviews provide you with the important information you need. If possible, find reviews of the wig in the same color, or color family, to the one you are considering. Try to find a reviewer that is close to your skin coloring and has similar features to you. Be sure to ask a reviewer what their head measurements are as well as their height. Height can drastically affect how a wig lays, especially regarding length. Watching these various types of reviews will give you a barometer as to whether that wig is right for you. Please keep in mind, the wig may not look or lay the same on you as it does on them, so the next step is critical. Read the fine print. Understand the shipping information as well as what the return and exchange polices are. You can do everything I suggest, and when you get your wig, it still may not work for you for whatever reason. Therefore, it is so important that you understand what the company’s policies are in the event you need to return a wig (if the company allows it). Whether or not a wig can be returned could be a very important factor, especially if you are purchasing a wig that is expensive and/or if you are on a limited budget.

Speaking of your natural hairline, here’s a bonus tip. One thing I have been doing lately, which has helped my wigs look more convincing, is to keep my widow’s peak, sideburns, and the patches of hair around my hairline that extend past my wig’s hairline intact. Though I shave down the sides and back of my bio hair, I leave enough in these areas that help create a “natural” illusion around the hairline.

Okay, now that we have explored the hairline, let’s move on to the rooting and part area of the wig.Have you ever noticed that wigs with some rooting (a darker color at the root of the wig that mimics bio hair) look more natural? If you’re looking to create the illusion of bio hair, choose a rooted style or create roots using a variety of products.

I have many videos on the technique of creating roots, but one of the most important elements is to be sure to root the wig along the parting space as well as along the hairline. Believe it or not, you most likely already have the products that you need to create rooting! Products that can be used to achieve roots include brow powders and matte eyeshadows of the color desired. Colored dry shampoos and root sprays are quite effective as well. These sprays allow you to blend in your bio hair along the hairline for a seamless look – especially if your hair is not quite the color of the roots. Keep in mind these products are not waterproof and can come off on your hands or be washed out. If you require a more waterproof option, then alcohol-activated face & body paint (makeup) would be best.

Now that the rooting looks more natural, let’s work on the part. Using powder in the part that matches your skin tone can help it look more like your scalp. To add further seamlessness, I place powder all along the hairline - where the lace and knots meet your skin.In the parting area, I use the same color powder as my skin tone or just slightly lighter, as our scalp can often be. Along the hairline, I use powder that is the same color as my skin tone and add a bit of bronzer where it would naturally fall on my forehead and temples near the wig.

We are getting closer now! There are several things you can “do” to the wig to ensure it looks more undetectable. Other than creating rooting, adding “baby hairs” and sideburns can serve more than one purpose. They can mimic numerous natural hairlines but don’t forget your research…not all hairlines look the same. Moreover, baby hairs and sideburns can be gelled or “laid” down, which can add a bit of security without having to glue down the entire wig.

The most important tip is to avoid making the wig look too perfect. If you want your wig to look natural, remember that hair is free moving, can have a mind of its own, and is not usually keen to stay put - unless styled that way. As I say, “gruff it up a bit”! Lol! When I say gruff it up a bit, I mean shake out the wig and break up the part – separating it from any permatease that may be present.Play around with the fibers of the part until it looks … “right” to you.

Finger-pick and fluff up the wig with your hands. Sometimes playing around with combing and moving around the fibers of a wig can really do wonders! As I said before, your head and hairline are unique to you, don’t expect your wig to come already prepared for it. A synthetic wig may look like human hair, but it is in fact fibers. From the wig’s assembly to packaging and shipping, those fibers can arrive to you flattened and tight to one another. The warmth of your hands and some gruffing can make your wig come alive.

Finally, feel free to style and accessorize! Treat your wig as you would your bio hair or the dream hair you have always wanted!! Experiment: clip it up, add a headband, put it in a pony…. have fun with it! My motto is: Life is short wear wigs!!

Care Tips to Avoid Damaging Your Curly Wig Do not shake or agitate curly wigs when you take them out of the box. If the curl or wave starts a little lower from the hairline, brush the top and part the hair, but only finger style the ends. Place the hairnet on the wig when washing to avoid weighing down and separating the curls. Use a leave-in conditioner and reshape the curls using your fingers. Shopping for a wig can be a confusing and frustrating endeavor, especially if it’s your first time. Faced with so many new hair and wig-related terms, some wig seekers simply don’t know where to start. The Wig Company aims to demystify the world of wigs so that you can shop with knowledge and confidence. Whether you’re a wig veteran looking to try something new or you’re deciding if wearing a wig is the right choice for you, read on and learn everything you need to know about real human hair wigs.

Human vs Synthetic vs Natural Hair When we use the term real human hair it seems pretty straightforward, right? You take hair from a human head and make a wig out of it—simple. Well, not quite. There are actually several different treatments of human hair that change how it looks and feels, how long it lasts, and its optimal care. Let’s start with the basics. Human hair wigs are completely distinct from synthetic wigs, whose fibers are produced by humans but not found in nature. Real or natural may be used to refer to human hair but know that not all real or natural hair is human; many real hair wigs are sourced from animals such as the yak, which has a hair structure remarkably similar to human hair. In short, when shopping for 100% human hair wigs or real hair toppers check that your wig is clearly described as human hair. Remy Hair In order to understand what it means for hair to qualify as Remy hair, we need to understand a little more about the structure of hair itself.

three-layers-of-human-hair.jpg A strand of human hair consists of three layers: The inner Medulla – the nearly invisible innermost layer of the hair shaft, soft and fragile, and has little to do with how hair behaves. A middle layer called the Cortex – this contains all the keratin and proteins that give your hair strength, and is also the place where chemical reactions from dyes and perms take place An outer Cuticle layer – this is made up of lots of little layers of translucent cells that overlap like scales or shingles on a roof. Remy human hair wigs and toppers pay special attention to the cuticle layer, making sure that all of the scales are facing the same direction. This is important because the cuticle layer protects the inner Cortex from the elements. When all cuticles are facing the same direction, brushing and styling pushes them tight to the Cortex. Closing the cuticle not only protects the hair, it also allows light to cleanly reflect off the strand, giving it a glossy, healthy shine. A Remy human hair wig or wiglet is a hairpiece with all the cuticles arranged facing downward. The hair is typically taken directly from the donor’s head and tied together so that it will remain in this natural state. Because of the attention to this detail, Remy wigs are long-lasting with fantastic shine and a natural look and feel.

Virgin Hair Though virgin and Remy are terms often used interchangeably, they really mean two completely different things. Virgin hair is always unprocessed and untouched by chemicals. No dyes, perms, bleaches or relaxers have been used to modify the chemical structure in any way. Virgin human hair wigs and half wigs are usually Remy, but while Remy human hair wigs can be virgin, they don’t have to be. Non-Remy Hair remy-non-remy-hair.jpg Non-Remy hair is almost always chemically treated. Because the cuticles are facing both up and down and it would take enormous effort to rearrange them, the hair is treated in an acid solution that strips the cuticle layer from the cortex. It’s then coated with a layer of silicone to add back some shine. This process has an advantage—hair with no cuticle is much easier to color—but non-Remy wigs can be prone to damage, don’t hold color as well, and won’t last as long. Kinder to your wallet in the short run, non-Remy wigs and toppers are ideal for people who like to change their style often. Selecting Your Human Hair Wig When selecting the human hair topper, wig or extension that’s right for you, here are some final considerations: Non-Remy hair wigs are easy to color and come in a variety of shades. They are less expensive than other options and perfect for people who like to try different looks. On the other hand, they don’t last very long, don’t retain as much shine as other wigs, and don’t look as natural.

Remy hair wigs are long-lasting (up to one year!), hold up well to styling, and have great shine. They’re heat-safe and style just like your real hair. They can be more difficult to color than non-Remy wigs and come in a narrower range of shades. Usually pricier, these wigs and toppers will be your mainstays. Virgin hair wigs are unprocessed with a very natural look. Virgin wigs are long-lasting and can be heat-styled. Always in naturally-occurring colors, they are less common and more expensive than chemically treated hair. Virgin Remy wigs are the gold standard for human hairpieces. From clip-on extensions to half-wigs and toppers, they are top-of-the-line quality and you can style them as if they were your real hair! The bigger price tag is worth it if you’re looking for a wig that will last and maintain its quality. Explore our wide selection of 100% human hair wigs in styles you’ll love. From quality human hair bobs to gorgeous layered looks, discover the benefits of superbly constructed real human hair wigs from The Wig Company! Tips/Tricks Wash or rinse all human hair products and style before wearing. Human hair is not ready to wear out of the box.

Rinsing with hot water will damage the base. We do not recommend sleeping, showering or swimming during wear. Store on a hanger to avoid unwanted kinks or crimps Avoid brushing the hair when wet to prevent damage. Any cutting or chemical processes, such as perming or coloring, should be done by a professional hair stylist.  Wig Cap Types and Constructions Ever wonder how wigs are made? It all starts with the base, or “wig cap”. A wig cap is the base material used to attach synthetic fibers or human hair strands to create and shape a wig. The latest wig cap constructions have a more natural/realistic look and are lighter, as well as more durable, which can increase comfort, and wear times. When choosing your wig, be sure to consider the cap construction to ensure a great fit for you. Here are the various types of wig cap constructions, along with their features and benefits. Basic or Capless Construction The basic or capless cap is the most common, sometimes called standard or traditional, wig cap design. This cap is constructed using narrow strips of material, or wefts, that are attached to the frame of the wig, usually by a machine. The top of the wig cap base has a solid lace top (closed top), where only the sides and back are designed with open rows (wefts). Because the wefts are open, you can actually put your fingers through them and touch your scalp. This open weft design helps provide a lighter, cooler, and more comfortable fit. In order to help conceal the rows of wefts, the base of the wefts are “crimped” or have shorter fibers added. These features also create lift and volume. Most wigs in this category are considered low maintenance because they are ready to wear out of the box, with minimal styling and preparation needed. Capless wigs are great quality at a budget-friendly price. Total Capless Construction
